When Skip blasts the air horn, you know it's time for the fun to begin. As you climb aboard the Bohemian Party Vessel, you pass a dashboard decorated with pop culture figurines from the 70's. "We were kids in the 70's. Star Wars, Speed Racer, the Simpsons were big when we were growing up," said Skip Brookbank, leader of the Posse.
Skip and his Posse rode into town on their 1985 GMC party vessel for the Cruisin' OC Show. "The main objective of the Bohemian Party Vessel is that we have season tickets for the Redksins games. We haven't missed a game in about 6 years. We take it to 4 or 5 NASCAR races a year, to Washington Nationals baseball games and car shows like this all around the East Coast. And it never fails to gather a lot of attention," said Skip.
Purchased 8 years ago for $1200, this former school bus is now bathed in white with black flames blazing the sides. The Posse, AKA the Bohemians, has rebuilt the motor, added side chrome exhausts, a new transmission and a deck with collapsible railings on the roof. But its going inside that exudes an atmosphere of fun. This vessel is equipped with plush couches, a love seat, kitchen, and bath and state of the art communication devices that range from DVD to satellite TV. The decor of the 70's blends into an earlier era of Elvis nostalgia. Skip says, "We're all huge Elvis fans, too". And of course there's the poster of National Bohemian Beer, the bus's namesake and the Posse's favorite beer. Skip proudly holds up a citation and says, "This is our ticket we just got today for unnecessary use of the horn. We'll be framing that to put on the wall."
All of the members of the Posse are married except Eric (Smoothie) and they do allow for a little family time. "The 4th of July we take the whole family to watch the fireworks from up in the roof," Skip says. "There are family functions and there are not family functions, my wife's pretty cool about it. I keep it at my home in Mechanicsville, Maryland. My wife is very tolerant," Rick smiles into the camera as if speaking to her, "Thank you, Pam."
So if you're driving down the highway and see strobe lights sparkling in the night, accenting the frame of a bus, check it out to see if it's the Bohemian Party Vessel and give them a "Howdy". They might even offer you a Bohemian Beer.
